It’s the holiday season, a time for celebration and
gratitude. Your journey towards ever increasing agility is all about continuous
improvement. If your loosing that momentum, not getting better and better over
time, something is amiss, and you are in fact losing agility.
We know from learning theory that people only (!) learn from reinforcement. So
although you need to set your sights for higher goals, it is at least as
important to repeatedly and continuously provide reinforcement for the
improvements already made. Not to justify the status quo, but to honor where
you came from, and also keep momentum to grow further where you want to go.
Besides the explicit appreciation for colleagues during
retrospectives, it is also functional to seek appreciation and recognition
outside the team. Maybe by presenting your advances at a conference, writing an
article for the company newsletter, or a professional association. This will
help you keep a sense of context and perspective.
As we approach a new year, reflect on longer term goals and
achievements. Seek inspiration for new ones. Me personally, I love using some
of this down time to condense some of my learnings and achievements in articles
and blogs. What are your New Year’s resolutions?
